Sara Kern

Sara Kern (1989) is a Slovenian-Australian screenwriter and film director based in Melbourne. Her debut feature Moja Vesna (2022) premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival, Generation K+. It received Best Film and Best Director nominations from the Australian Film Critics Association and won the Slovenian Director's Guild Award, Best First Film Award at Sale International Film Festival Morocco, and the Preseren Fund Prize; a Slovenian national award for outstanding artistic achievement. Kern's previous award-winning short films Good Luck Orlo (2016) and Vesna Goodbye (2020) screened at festivals such as Venice International Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival, Chicago International Film Festival, Seattle International Film Festival, Sarajevo International Film Festival. Kern completed studies in Film Directing at The Academy of Theatre, Radio, Film and Television Ljubljana and worked for several years as a screenwriter for Television Slovenia before moving to Australia.

SPOK Film was established in 2016 and is dedicated to discovering, promoting and distributing new talents of Slovenian cinema worldwide as well as world cinema in Slovenia and Southeast Europe. The company was established by Jožko Rutar, who previously worked as a producer at Staragara Production and was a managing director of Slovenian Film Centre. With 20 years of experience in production, film funding and policy making, the company is focused on developing, producing, promoting and distributing high-end art-house films, as well as offering a wide range of various consultations in the field of film. Its first completed minority co-production Murina, directed by Antoneta Alamat Kusijanović, was presented at Quinzaine des Réalisateurs 2021 and awarded with Caméra d'Or.
